LaniLetter Designs is a collective of hand-lettered and handmade goods created by Lanie Whitby. A graduate of the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (FIDM), Lanie has always loved and appreciated the art of hand-lettering. Her creative endeavors led her to create LaniLetter Designs with the hopes of sharing her love of letters and keeping the art of hand-lettering alive.

1. How long have you been practicing hand-lettering? Please share with us what hand-lettering means (for those of us don't know)? How did you get into this art form?

Hand-Lettering is the art of drawing letters and is often connected with Calligraphy, which is the art of writing letters. I fell in love with handwriting, in general, at an early age. My dad, who passed away last year, taught me how to write in cursive before I was in kindergarten. And I have been a self-proclaimed "Lover of Letters" ever since.

2. How/why did you start your business? What type of services do you provide? What makes your business unique? What advice would you give someone who is interested in starting their own business?

I first started LaniLetter Designs as a creative outlet for myself. With the fantastic support from family, friends, and online strangers – my passion project quickly grew into a profitable business, ranging from finished goods to custom commissioned pieces. Every piece that I create is unique because it all starts with a hand-drawn sketch and will have a bit of my personality intertwined within each design.

My advice to someone interested in starting their own business is to DO THE DAMN THANG!

3. What or who is your biggest inspiration?

My biggest inspiration has definitely evolved over the past year. Although the passing of my father stinted me at first - it has now catapulted my motivation to keep going. Thus, my dad has become my biggest inspiration. After all, he is the reason why I fell in love with lettering.

4. What made 2019 a milestone for you?

Not to beat a dead horse (bad pun), but 2019 was a milestone for me for obvious reasons. My father's passing taught me how to overcome hardships and to keep pushing no matter what.

5. What is on the horizon for 2020?

2020 has started on a promising note, as I am back to teaching workshops and plan to keep teaching throughout the year.

See the link below for workshop dates: http://www.laniletter.com/workshops

6. What does being a "Queen" mean to you?

Being a Queen to me means being able to pave the way for ladies of ALL ethnic backgrounds and putting an end to patriarchal beliefs.
